I am Evelyn Stewart, I am a Senior Paediatric Sleep Practitioner. As well as working privately with families I work for the Children’s Sleep Disorder Service at The Children’s Hospital in Southampton, UK, and I am a member of The British Sleep Society and the International Paediatric Sleep Association. I work with families of typically developing children as well as children with additional needs, aged 6 months to 16 years. As my private work is carried out via telephone consultations and SKYPE I have clients all over the world. I have worked with hundreds of families in the last 8 years and I am fully aware of the impact that sleep disturbance has on a household, rarely is it ever just the child who is affected!
My approach is always to take into consideration exactly what it is parents want to achieve, their individual parenting style, the impact of a sleep programme on other family member, the family home set up, the age/stage and ability of the baby/child, and to then negotiate a sleep management programme with parents, so as to be sure that they are carrying out a programme that works for them and that they are comfortable with.
In my NHS work as well as working with parents to help manage sleep problems I also teach on the subject of sleep both nationally and internationally. I teach professionals including teachers, health professionals, and those working in social care. In my private work I teach about the importance of sleep on the Norland Nannies Degree Course as well as the course training nannies at Chiltern College every year. I have taught parents and staff at numerous independent schools including Wellington College, Pilgrims School Winchester and Sherborne Boys School in Dorset as well teaching in local authority schools, charities and conferences across the country.
